The Scottish Ball was started over 25 years ago by a group of Scots
residing in New York who were looking for opportunities to dance Scottish
country reels and to offer their American friends an evening of Scottish
music and fun. It was usually held once a year at the Abigail Adams
Smith Museum. In more recent years, there have been various locations,
including the Ballroom of the New York Genealogical & Biographical
Society and now the Synod House at St. John the Divine. Music is
provided by Abby Newton and her Celtic Crossing Band in addition to the
piper, Larry Cole. The guests feast upon delicious Scottish spreads
provided by the Good Cateress (as well as a wee dram or two!)
Dance cards are provided at the beginning of the evening as guests
mingle with cocktails and exchange dances such as The Dashing White Sargeant,
the Eightsome Reel, Gay Gordons, and the Reel of the 51st Division.
Once dinner has finished, the program continues with the Hamilton House,
the Duke of Perth and the Inverness Country Dance. The Gallop and
singing of Auld Lang Syne conclude the evening.
The 100+ attendees are mainly from New York and the UK and share a
common interest in Scotland either through their ancestry or friends.
Three dance practice sessions are given prior to the Ball to afford newcomers
the instruction they need or as a review for past guests. The rehearsals
also offer an opportunity for meeting other potential dance partners at
the Ball. Our approach to reeling is very relaxed and does not adhere
to the Royal Scottish Country Dancing Society rules and regulations.
